I am now apart of “Project Steve”

18 10 2010

Yesterday I officially joined NCSE’s “Project Steve” which is collection of scientists named Steve (or it’s variants) who support the following statement:

Evolution is a vital, well-supported, unifying principle of the biological sciences, and the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of the idea that all living things share a common ancestry. Although there are legitimate debates about the patterns and processes of evolution, there is no serious scientific doubt that evolution occurred or that natural selection is a major mechanism in its occurrence. It is scientifically inappropriate and pedagogically irresponsible for creationist pseudoscience, including but not limited to “intelligent design,” to be introduced into the science curricula of our nation’s public schools.

The project was started as a tongue and check response to the various creationist lists and petitions such as the “101 scientists who reject natural selection” and so forth. The intent of Project Steve is to show that while creationists might be able to find groups of scientists and engineers who reject evolution, there are tens to hundreds of times as many scientists who accept it. More details on the project can be found here.

Finally, for those of you interested, here is a great video by youTube user DonExodus2 where one of these creationist lists is scrutinized in some detail and shown to be more than a little dishonest.
